Portree is the best home base for the Isle of Skye area and the largest settlement and general hub of activity. The name comes from Port Righ which literally means royal port. It is small with only 3000 full time residents, way too small to be considered a town, but in the summer it is filled with tourists and sightseers. We only spent one night in the village but that evening was very enjoyable, just walking around, having a dinner with a terrific view of the harbor it was magic. I would encourage anyone who visits the Highlands of Scotland to make a stop or stay for a night on the Isle of Skye and stay in Portree.
